Mathematics: Math Their Way guides the experiences for children to investigate math concepts. Curriculum developed by the Diocese of Providence reflects National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards and State of RI Mathematics Standards for teaching and learning. Children are actively engaged in problem solving, critical thinking to build number sense and big ideas in their environment. Curriculum provides instructional experiences so that students progress from the concrete level, to the pictorial level and then to the abstract level. Mathematics is integrated into daily activities in a meaningful way with authentic experiences of the children. Concepts are not taught in isolation but are interwoven across all subject areas. Opportunities for exploration, center work and sharing addresses all aspects of learning. Every child needs time to explore new materials before those explorations are directed. (Math Their Way).

Literacy: Children are evaluated one-on-one to determine the starting level for reading using Fountas&Pinnell assessment tools. This 1:1 assessment allows the teacher to observe what a child does at the text level when approaching new words. Teacher notes if he/she is attempting to sound out, identifies sight words in the context of text, the ease at which he/she reads text and the ability to retell and demonstrate comprehension.

Sight Words: Sight word recognition is taught along side a strong phonics program. Sight words are continually reinforced throughout the day as children note these words on Word Walls, in teacher-written messages, big book reading, and pocket chart poetry/stories. Sight words are important anchors for reading as the memorization of these words allows the child to build fluency and maintain meaning of text.
Children will build a sight word vocabulary of 90+ words throughout the kindergarten year. Tried and true means of learning these words include regular drill, flash cards, sky writing, orally spelling, creating chants, writing in paint/sand or other medium, and locating the words in other print sources.
As sight words do not follow a typical spelling pattern in agreement with known letter sounds, children should not attempt to sound out these words. The following link will bring you to the first base of sight words for the first trimester.
